On September 1st 1996 the innovative new course Business Law was established at the University of Applied Sciences Schmalkalden. This course has an independent Faculty which is infrequently offered at German Universities of Applied Sciences.

The founding professors Prof. Dr. Wörlen, Prof. Dr. Abel, Prof. Dr. Slapnicar and Prof. Dr. Hofmann established a method of training in cooperation with the economy which combines legal and economical knowledge in an optimal and praxis orientated way.

Assisted by seven further professors as well as numerous assistant lectures and staff they educated the first 34 alumni with the certificate "Diplom WirtschaftsjuristIn (FH)" until 2000. Since then the number of applications for one of the 86 university places increased continuously.

In 2006 a new chapter of development for the Faculty started with the introduction of the Bachelor of Laws. This the "Diplom" compensating certificate enjoys an undamped popularity. A masterís course which complements the bachelor is offered since 2008.

In July 2008 the department of Business Law became Faculty of Business Law because of the new Thuringian University and College Act.
