Informations for international students

Full time study

The rules governing access to higher education in Schmalkalden are laid down in the Thuringian Higher Education Act and concur with the rules generally applicable in Germany. The minimum requirements are:

  • General or subject-specific university entrance qualification (e.g. A-Levels, High School Diploma)
  • The "German Language Exam for University Entrance" (DSH).

You can only begin your studies in the winter semester of each year. The extent to which you can begin to study directly, or first have to take the entrance exam of the State Study College in Nordhausen (or elsewhere) can only be determined after you have submitted your application in full. The application should comprise the following documentation:

  • Letter of application explaining your reasons for wishing to study in Schmalkalden,
  • Application form (see the PDF file),
  • CV with two passport photos
  • Birth certificate,
  • University entrance certificate
  • University entrance certificate (officially authenticated copies in German or English),
  • Proof of a monthly income of at least € 500 to cover living expenses.

Applications should be sent directly to the International Office.

Guest students

Foreign students from our partner universities, or participating in specific programmes, who wish to study for one or two semesters in Schmalkalden are normally registered as guest students. The only documentation required is a student identity card from your home university.

German courses for foreign students

The International Office offers German courses for foreign students from our international partner institutions that can be taken alongside your normal study programme. In addition, an intensive German for Foreigners course is held in the summer for students from our partner universities. The UASS does NOT offer DSH (German exam for foreign students wishing to study in Germany) courses or exams. Foreign applicants wishing to complete a full degree in Schmalkalden thus have to have passed this exam at another university before applying to Schmalkalden.

Support Programme

The International Office of the UASS has a comprehensive support programme for international students. This includes German courses, excursions, study trips, parties and much more. The current programme can be found under "What's New?" in the menu.
