Life in Schmalkalden

The town

In Schmalkalden there is a lot to discover: romantic corners, narrow lanes, lovingly restored half-timbered houses and Wilhelmsburg castle. The town, situated in the middle of the Thuringian Forest and near the Rennsteig, offers something for everyone. Schmalkalden has been an official university town since 2004 and provides ideal conditions for studying: learning in quiet surroundings, a town which is easy to settle in to and sufficient leisure-time activities for relaxation. Numerous pubs and discos in and around Schmalkalden ensure a diversified nightlife.

Sport and culture

Whether it is aerobics, spinning or jiu jitsu - students of the University of Applied Sciences Schmalkalden can train free of charge in more than 15 types of sport. There is a football and basketball pitch as well as a beach volleyball pitch on the campus. The town's outdoor pool is situated right beside the campus and offers a refreshing cool down in summer.

The countryside around Schmalkalden also offers special attractions: mountain biking in summer and skiing in winter. The well-known winter sports town of Oberhof is only 26 km away and is a paradise for winter sports fans. Biathlon shooting courses are offered, as well as cross-country skiing and snowboarding courses.

Be it the campus cinema, concerts or art exhibitions, on the campus there is always something going on. The "Schmalympic Games", which take place each year in June, are a highlight in the events calendar. For a whole week the campus turns into an "Olympic Village" where students, employees and professors participate in sporting contests during the day and party to live music on the campus in the evenings. The Student Club Schmalkalden holds regular parties, giving a good opportunity to celebrate and to unwind after studying.

But also in Schmalkalden and surroundings a high value is set on culture. In the Kunsthaus am Markt a large variety of exhibitions and talks are offered. In the nearby theatre town of Meiningen the South Thuringian state theatre, which is also well known outside Thuringia, offers plays, opera and puppet theatre.
